Race report: Another Day, Another Combe: Horta Repeats at Castle Combe in Yellow Corvette
Castle Combe, Wiltshire. If you liked yesterday's biscuit-tin aesthetic and ducks, today we have more of them, except shorter. Much shorter. Today's feature presentation at the old airfield perimeter road was a brisk, blink-and-you-miss-it four-lap dash around the 2.980 km layout. Twenty-four hours after stretching his legs over 25 laps, Fernando Horta took his Chevrolet Corvette C6-R GT2 out for a four-lap sprint and decided that wasting time was against union rules.
What the numbers say
Fernando Horta won by 12.471 seconds, completing the 4 laps in 4:17.258. Everyone else spent those four minutes trying to figure out which direction the yellow missile had gone.
His best lap was a blistering 1:00.673. The next best lap of the entire field was Sol Leung's 1:04.442 in the Reiter Lamborghini Gallardo — a massive 3.769 seconds slower. Let that sink in: Leung's absolute flyer was nearly four seconds off Horta's pace over a sub-three-kilometer lap. If Horta had parked the Corvette for a quick cup of coffee on lap 3, he might still have finished in the top five.
The real fight, if you can call it that when everyone is compressed into four short laps, was for the minor steps of the podium. Sol Leung secured second place in the Lamborghini, holding off Tracy Nolte's AF Corse Ferrari F430 by 3.968 seconds. Nolte, in turn, had to check his mirrors constantly for Marty Uren's BMW M3, beating the Bimmer to the flag by a razor-thin 0.389 seconds. Four cars finished within six seconds of each other behind the winner, providing about 90% of the day's actual entertainment.
Further down the order, the timing sheets recorded a clean sweep of four laps completed by all 32 starters — an impressive reliability statistic for a pack of GT2 and GT3 machinery, or simply proof that nobody had enough time to crash properly before the checkered flag came out. Thiago Canola, our honorary riograndense-in-exile flying the Brazilian flag for Flying Lizard Motorsport, brought his Porsche 996 home in 32nd place with a respectable 1:05.048 best lap, proving that he knows how to hustle an old frog even if the scoreboard didn't quite agree with his ambitions today.
We cannot tell you where the lead changed hands, primarily because a four-lap race doesn't leave much room for a narrative arc beyond "lights out, Corvette disappears, everyone else follows slowly." The grid column is empty once again, suggesting the starting order was decided by a game of rock-paper-scissors in the paddock.
Quotes
Fernando Horta (Corvette Racing, winner): Four laps? Is that all? I barely had time to settle into my seat and check the radio presets before I was seeing the checkered flag. The car was hooked up. I punched a 1:00.6 and honestly thought the timing screen was glitching out. If we raced any shorter, I'd be crossing the finish line before I even left the pit lane. Not that I'm complaining. Hand over the trophy and let's go get some tea.
Sol Leung (Reiter Engineering, 2nd): Second place feels like a win when the guy in front of you is driving a spaceship disguised as a Chevy. I saw yellow in my mirrors at the start, and then I didn't see it again until I came into parc fermé and he was already out of the car signing autographs.
Tracy Nolte (AF Corse, 3rd): A podium! Third place! I held off a BMW for four whole laps. My heart rate is higher now than it was during the whole race. Can we do two-lap races next time? My tires would last longer.
Marty Uren (Rahal Letterman Racing, 4th): Three tenths. Three tenths away from a podium. I was closer to Tracy at the line than Tracy was to Sol. I'm going to spend the evening measuring my front bumper with a caliper.
Thiago Canola (Flying Lizard Motorsport, 32nd): Look, the Porsche is a classic, alright? And someone has to anchor the timing sheet so the top of it looks prettier by contrast. I missed tib. At least when tib is here, someone else is complaining about the setup.
The council investigates
The Super Mario World MotorSport Offline Solo Sessions Castle Combe Short-Sprint Duude Foundation (SMWMSOSSCCSSDF) has reviewed the data from this four-lap dash and issued the following decrees:
- Motion 20260926/01: the micro-race. The council notes that a four-lap race is barely long enough to get the engine oil up to temperature. Several ministers fell asleep before the second lap concluded and missed the entire podium battle. Future events of this length must include at least one mandatory pit stop for biscuits to justify the paperwork.
- Motion 20260926/02: the Corvette hegemony. Christian Hamilton, driving the other Corvette Racing entry, finished down in 20th place, nearly a minute behind his teammate in the exact same chassis. The council has ordered a forensic inspection of Hamilton's telemetry to check if his handbrake was engaged for all four laps.
No further thoughts will be given on this matter, and the ElderCouncil has already gone back to sleep. *snore*
So what now?
Two races at Castle Combe, two totally different distances, same yellow Corvette at the very top of the timing monitor. Horta is collecting trophies like loose change, and the rest of the field is left wondering if anyone can find a way to shave four seconds off their lap times before the next round.
Next time, the saga continues…
Ps. Dave, seriously, where are you? Even in a four-lap sprint, we could have used a backmarker to lap twice! Come back!
